Enclosed by towering Himalayan Mountains on its three sides, the Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) hosts the densest population of Himalayan wildlife species, is an ideal place for wildlife buffs. Built in 1984 is also known as Jawaharlal Lal Nehru Great Himalayan National Park and is sprawl over an area of about 755 sq km and was accorded with the status of national park in 1999. Located in the lap of spectacular natural panorama, the park is home to some of the most indefinable and scarce species of animals. The location is convenient and accessible to visit as it is just 50 kms from Kullu.
Sprawling on an area of 50 sq km, it boasts of over 375 fauna species, including 31 species of mammals and 181 species of birds. The fauna of the park includes some of the most exotic species of animals like snow leopard, blue sheep, Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, goral, Ibex, black bears and many others.
Variety of birds’ species includes golden eagles, Himalayan griffon vultures, lammergeyers, raptors, endangered species of western tragopan and over 50 species of other migratory birds. The flora of the national park consists of trees, shrubs, herbs and medicinal plants. Also, atypical species of spurge, buckthorn, yew, valerians, leycesteria, balsams, etc. are found here. It has also been a major source of water for the neighboring regions, the park has Beas, Sainj, Jiwa and Tirthan rivers gushing through it.
For the adventure seekers and trekkers there are places like Neuli- Sarangarh loop, Neuli- Sainj valley, Sainj- Tirthan valley, Gushaini-Tinder village, Gushaini- Shilt Hut, Neuli-Manu temple, Siund- Pashi villages, Jiwa Nala- Parvati River valley, Gushaini- Tirthan valley and Shamshi- Kaza that will bring amusement to the trip.
Park rangers are there for accompanying the tourists. Therefore, safety is not a concern. The arrangements can be made at the Sai Ropa Tourist Center, located 5 Kms before Gushaini. To reach the Himalayan National Park, tourists can catch any bus on the Mandi-Manali route to Aut and further can hire a taxi to the park entrance.
The best time to visit the park is from the months of April to June and again from September to November. It is advised to the tourists to have a travel insurance covering emergency helicopter flights.
