Gorewada Lake is positioned on the north-western end of the simple city of Maharashtra, Nagpur. This fresh water lake attracts people for its serene environs, which was earlier a primary source of water supply and is owned by the water works department, who take the charge for the maintenance of the site.


The Lake and its out-of-the-way surroundings are favored by outdoor enthusiasts, who seek to spend their time away from the maddening crowds as the lake happens to be in the suburbs of the city.


According to the research, the lake is found to be the cleanest of the lakes in Nagpur. Instituted as a water works department’s project in the year 1911, the lake was rich with thick vegetation, which made it possible to serve in as an important habitat for migratory ducks. Even at present, the lake holds thick vegetation. In the year1998, a leopard was found dead in its vicinity. There is a dam ranging its height of 2,350 feet down, which at the water body itself.


Gorewada is just a15 km drive from the city of Nagpur and is well known as an excellent outing spot. Encircled by woods, the natural habitat attracts avian as well as wildlife species. The gardens in the region of the lake are a great for relaxation joint as one can actually breathe in the natural ambience and have traditionally been a popular picnic spot. The beautiful garden and lakeside rest house offer minimal facilities.


The State government is at present planning for a safari park on 1,700 acres of forest land in the surroundings of Gorewada Lake. Besides a zoological park the project covers the safari park, botanical garden, breeding centre, wetlands; interpretation centre and eco-tourism projects.
