Digha Beach

Nestled in the Indian state of West Bengal, Digha stands as a seaside resort. It is located in the district of East Midnapore, at the northern end of the Bay of Bengal. Standing as the most popular beach in the state, the sea resort allures its visitors with its charm and picturesque beauty. Situated at a distance of about 187 km from the state capital, Kolkata, this sea resort is aptly described as the ‘Brighton of the East’ as mentioned in one of Warren Hastings letters, to his wife. It is perfect spot for a delightful holiday.

The beach of Digha has a low slope with a shallow sand coast, which forms gentle waves that are extended to 7 km in length. The beach is infringed with Casuarinas plantation, which runs along the coast and adding a boost to the natural beauty. The pine groves that make a beautiful here at the beach also help in reducing erosion of the dunes. The beach also renders a breathtaking view of sunrise and sunset. The replica of the sunset and sunrise on the salty waters of the Bay of Bengal is something that makes a picture of an artists canvas.

In 1923, an English tourist John Frank Smith was so moved by the beauty of Digha that he started living here in the place. His writings in the description of the beauty of Digha slowly gave exposure to this place. During the post independence period, he persuaded the chief minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy to set Digha as a beach resort.

Digha is accessible from Kolkata by road and by train.
