Dhamek Stupa is the famous monument located at Sarnath, which is 13 kms away from Varanasi city in Uttar Pradesh state of India. In 500 CE, Dhamek stupa was built to replace an earlier structure commissioned by the great Mauryan king Ashoka in 249 BCE. There were various monument built by the emperor at that time. The Stupa contains relics related to Buddha including calcinated bones. Along with that, an engraved Ashoka Pillar also stands near the site.


Dhamek Stupa, which used to be the seat for Holly Buddha is one of the largest Buddhist structure not only in Sarnath but in whole world. 31.3 meters high, this Stupa has the diameter of 28.3. Located in a Deer park, Dhamek Stupa is of great importance as Buddha gave his first sermon, after attaining enlightenment, to his disciples that revealed his “Eightfold Path“. The circular mounds encircled the Stupa are designed with large stones bearing floral designs of Gupta period. There are many popular tourist attractions around Dhamekh Stupa including the Mulgandakuti Vihara, the Buddha Temple, the extensive excavated archaeological site, Digambar Jain Temple, the ASI museum and the Standing statue of Buddha at Thai Buddha Vihar.
