Deeg Fort

Established by Maharaja Suraj Mal in the year 1730, Deeg Fort stands in the town of Deeg. The town of Deeg served as the capital of the Jat rulers in the 18th century. The town is just at a distance of about 34 km from Bharatpur, a city which forms a part of the Indian state of Rajasthan. The palace complex of the Deeg Fort looks quite imposing one even in its relics. There is a small lake in the premises of the fort which is comprised of a striking fountain system, along with a massive tank on the top of Kishan Bhawan, which actually feeds the fountain to pour waters. During the festival of Holi, the fountains in the fort pours out colored waters, making as another striking feature of the fort.


The fort has a square-figured layout and this central fort is erected over an elevated point and is enclosed by a shallow broad moat. The walls are 8 km long in its circumference which are halted by 10 gateways that are studded with 72 bastions. Out of these 10 gateways, the gateway which is protected with anti-elephant strikes stands as the entrance gate of the fort.


Though the interiors are more or less in ruins now, yet the fort gives a breath taking view to its spectators. There are 12 towers in the fort, the tower named as Lakha Burj is the largest of them all, which is erected in the North West corner of the palace. The Suraj Mal Haveli is created out is a typical Bangaldar style and the sprawled lawns in the fort are patterned in a popular ‘char Bagh’ style are wel maintained in the fort.


The fort is surrounded by an array of stunning palaces which includes Gopal Bhavan, Suraj Bhavan, Nand Bhavan, Kishan Bhavan, Keshav Bhavan, Purana Mahal and Sheesh Mahal. All these palaces form a group and collectively are called as the Deeg Palace.


The fort is easy to reach via road as it is situated at a distance of about 35 km from the city of Bharatpur.
