Church of Mary Immaculate Conception

Established in 1541, the Church of Mary Immaculate Conception is one of the most famous landmarks in the Indian state of Goa. This prominent church is thought to be one of the earliest churches in the state. Nestled in the heart of the state capital, Panaji, Church of Mary Immaculate Conception is a marvel at the magnitude of its construction.


This magnificent church is built in sere surroundings and is extremely beautiful at its sight. In the evenings, you can see a silhouette formed at the edges of the church with the gleaming lights and bulbs, which shimmers in the inky dark sky renders the place to watch and catch the sight on the canvas.


There is a large bell at the Church of Mary Immaculate Conception which stands as the second largest bell in the world. Known as the Bell of the Inquisition, this bell is believed to be a part of the Church of Our Lady of Grace in Old Goa. It was only in 1841, after the city of Panaji became the state capital, that it shifted to the Mary Immaculate Church. The interiors of the church are simple and beautiful.


The main altar dedicated to Mary Immaculate which is infringed by two altars on its either side. The altar which appears on the left side is dedicated to Jesus Crucified while the right one honors Our Lady of the Rosary. There is a marble statue at each side of the altar, the statues of St. Peter and one of St Paul. The Chapel of St. Francis Xavier, which is encased with a glass statue of the very saint, is located towards the south of the main altar.


Every year on 8th December, devotees gather at the church in huge masses to attend the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The feast is a merriment of the conception of Lord Jesus by Mother Mary. The church is easily accessible through taxi, auto or buses from the state capital, Panaji.
