Located in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh, Chunar Fort is an important historical monument of India. The fort is believed to have been built by Maharaja Vikramaditya, King of Ujjain. Situated at a distance of 45 km from Mirzapur, this fort was of great importance to the Mughal King, Babar. This Fort is also related to various other emperors of Mughal dynasty. Later, the fort was also utilized by the King Sher Shah Suri and Akbar. Moving ahead, in 1772, the fort was captured by East India Company. Apart from that, the ancient fort is also famous as the birthplace of Sonwa Mandap, Bhartihari’s Samadhi and Vithalnathji’s. According to mythology, the Chunar Fort was earlier named as Charanadri.


Built with sandstones, the Chunar Fort is surrounded by the huge wall.
