Shimla is not a place to romance only, but is also known for possessing the second oldest church from the times of British Raj. Christ Church in Shimla is acknowledged as the second oldest Church in India. In Shimla, Christ Church stands as the prominent landmark. The silhouette of Christ Church can be seen on the skyline from miles around the surrounding areas of Shimla city.


Christ Church continued to be a heritage of the British Raj for a long period of time. Colonel JT Boileau designed Christ Church in 1844; but it was sanctified after 1857. The clocks on Christ Church were added later but none of are in the operating position, now. Then in 1873, a porch was added to the church. Shimla, being reigned as summer capital for long 75 years, this church happened to be the main place for the Sunday prayers for the officials and other notables of the Raj. Positioned on the Mall Road, Christ Church in Shimla, Christ church survived the partition and various other upheavals of India. Thereafter, it has become one of the main tourist attractions in Shimla and without visiting it, a Shimla tour is considered as incomplete.


Visit this sacred place and experience the serenity that soothes the soul in the air of sanctity. You could not help ignoring the gorgeously beautiful stained glass windows inside the Church. In addition, around the chancel window there was once a beautiful fresco fashioned by Lockwood Kipling, the famous writer Rudyard Kiplings father and the principal of Mayo School of Art in Lahore. However, it is no more in the church.
