The venue of annually held Chithirai festival is the famous Madurai temple, which is situated at a distance of about 500 km from Chennai. The festival is held in the Tamil month of Chithirai, which according to Georgian Calendar is somewhere between April and May for around ten days.
The festivity is carried in as the reenactment of the marriage of the Pandiyan princess Meenakshi to Lord Sundareswarar (Lord Shiva). The festival encompasses a parade of Lord Vishnu, locally known as Lord Kallazhagar, who is believed to be the brother of Goddess Meenakshi. The enactment is performed as the brother of Goddess Meenakshi, Lord Vishnu travels from his abode in Azhagarmalai to get his sister married to Lord Sundareshwarar and travels in a golden chariot, which is the most important legend behind celebrating this festival of Chithirai.
The celebrations of the festival commences by hoisting a flag in the temple and is further followed by the procession of Lord Vishnu on the golden chariot, which is accompanied with drum beats, flowers incense sticks and camphor. This spiritual festivity is further heightened with the offerings to the God and Goddess.
There is a fair held on this day, which is witnessed by plethora of denotes from all across thew country, without any bar of religion and culture.
