It was only in the 18th century CE that the city took its name as Bodgh Gaya and the monastery is now called as the Mahabodhi Temple.
The city is the holiest pilgrimage of Buddhism and the most important among the main four pilgrimage sites associated to Gautama Buddha, the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath.
