Berijam Lake

Berijam Lake

Berijam Lake is one of the most eye-catching touring spot in Tamil Nadu. The lake nestles in Kodaikanal at about 23 km from the Kodai bus stand. It is an enchanting picnic spot providing a serene ambience. The lake water is hygienic & untainted and is also used for the water requirements of Periyakulam town and other nearby areas. The lake is considered as one of the most beautiful lakes in South India, sprawling over an area of 24 hectares. The lake is star shaped and is known for its pristine water. The backdrop provides an ideal location for relaxing and refreshing. According to the legends, the lake was discovered by the British & Spanish people and before that it was a swamp area. The lake is situated at a high altitude, just a couple of hundred feet below Kodai. Besides this, there are fantastic pine forests around the lake.

The lake also provides opportunity for the trekking activities. If you want to experience the lake’s beauty at night, then you need to take the permission from the Forest Office, but the efforts for it is worth having.

From here, you can also catch a glimpse of a serene valley of Shola forests with its diverse medicinal and aromatic plants and the lake quiescent like a pool of panacea in its bosom. Here you can also have the glimpses of some fauna like Bisons, Nilgiri Lemurs, flying squirrels and deer, Crested Serpent Eagles, Pariah Kites, pale-rumped Swallows and the Edible-nest Swiftlets, Rosefinch, the Blue Chat, several Leaf-warblers and Blyths Reed-warbler.
