Another popular beach in the district of South Goa is Benaulim Beach and is about 2 km from Colva Beach. This untouched beach of Benaulim opens up a panorama of uncluttered white sands that laced up with the azure waters of the Arabian Sea.
As per the Hindu Mythology, the state of Goa was formed when; the learned man Shri Parshuram, who is believed to be the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It was when he fired an arrow into the sea from the top of the Western Ghats and ordered the waters here to draw back. It is believed that the spot where the streaking arrow fell on to the earth, the spot happened to be called as “Benali”, in Sanskrit, but was later changed and turned into Benaulim as the former name was distorted by the Portuguese.
The beach nestled in the midst of the Colva beach, which is just at a distance of about 2 km and Margao Town which is just 7 km away from the beach. This quiet beach is dotted with coconut groves that are lined up at its fringes. This serene beach is largely undiscovered even by the domestic tourists and just during the weekends it is gathered by the local masses.
The major attractions of the beach are its Dolphin Cruises that are organized by the local people here. After strolling over the length of the beach and having leisure time here, in its vicinity there is Benaulim Village, which is popular for its rosewood furniture and intricate carvings.
The best time to pay a visit to the place is in the months from October to May as the climate is quite pleasant and during the month of April, there is a fair held at the beachside. The fair is a must-visit when in Goa, as it gives an opportunity to discover and explore the culture and tradition of the state of Goa.
Benaulim Beach is situated just at a distance of about 28 kilometers from Dabolim Airport. The nearest railhead is at Margao, which is just 7 km away from the benaulim Beach.
