Baranagar also known as Barahanagar, is literally defined as the big (Bara or Burra), and town or land (nagar) of the pig (baraha). This town falls in the northern suburbs of the state capital, Kolkata. The town is also a municipality in North 24 District in the north eastern Indian state of West Bengal. Baranagar Municipal Area stands in the midst of Sinthee More and Dunlop.


The town of Baranagar is erected at an elevation of about 12 m on the eastern side of the Hooghly River. The history of this town takes us back to the 17th century, during the times when the Dutch mynheers temporarily settled here. The town had been a hub of extensive jute trade with the manufacture of gunny bags.

The summers here in the city of Baranagar are hot and humid, with comparatively colder nights as it stands in a close proximity to the Bay of Bengal. Monsoon here is starts from the month of June and remains till the month of September. Then there is starts autumn season from October to November. This period is pleasant and makes an ideal season to pay a visit to the city. With November, the winter season starts taking its place of the frontage which remains here till the month of February.
