Arikamedu is considered as one of the most visiting places in Pondicherry. The place showcases its historical value with its perpendicular walls and the mission house. It is situated on the banks of the Ariyankuppam River at a distance of about 4 km from Pondicherry. It was once considered as the trade centre of the Romans. The excavations of this place have been done a lot of times and the city was known for bead making and fishing. It was also known for having trade relations with the Romans. The spot is presumed as the place of Roman settlements approximately 2000 years ago. It is assumed that the remnants of the French Jesuit Mission House, built in 18th century are also visible here. The most frequent visitors of this place are historians and archaeological. The excavations of this place have explored and discovered the remnants of Romans, declaring their presence in the olden times. The things that reveal the roman’s presence here in the city are coins, ceramics and other materials. Wine was supposed to have been imported whereas exported goods include textiles, glass and many more. The references of this ancient city were made in Tamil as well as Roman literature. The Pondicherry museum has preserved the findings of Arikamedu. Other excavations from the city are Veerampattinam Beach, the Aryankuppam River and can view the lighthouse. The place is all enveloped and encircled with by the nature and its beauty.
