Amravati lying in the Indian state of Maharashtra is the seventh most populated city within the state and is also popular for hosting various temples and pilgrimages. The city is erected at an elevation of 343 m and is at a distance of around 156 km from Nagpur. The phrase Amravati literally means the ‘home of immortals’.


The first Municipal Corporation in India was the Amravati Municipal Corporation, which was established in 1983, which has introduced with the privatization of octroi. Amravati is a district in the state of Maharashtra in India. This metropolitan area falls at the heart of the country and is a renowned as a tourist spot with its acknowledgement of being as a major commercial and trading hub. The administrative headquarters of the district is positioned in the town of Amravati.


Traditionally called as Udumbravati, derived its present name Amravati from the ancient Ambadevi temple, which nestles here in the district. Amravati is a time-honored city as was established in 1097. It is supposedly said that in the 14th century Amravati district encountered famine and consequently the people from the city migrated to Gujarat and Malwa. During the British rule the city was reorganized and modernized.


The city had been a part of the Central Provinces and Berar in the year 1903. However, after independence, in 1956, Amravati district became a part of Mumbai state till the present. Later in the year 1960 the city gained its independence and became an independent district of Maharashtra.


It also stands as the land of some of the famous personalities who have marked their presence in the field of literature and arts are Gopal Nilkanth Dandekar, Suresh Bhat also known as the Ghazal Samrat and others. The city is also famed for its cultural activities and festivals like Navaratri, Garba, Diwali and Holi.
