Ajanta caves are the popular historical monuments located near Aurangabad city in Maharashtra state of India. It is one of the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO and is largely visited by tourist. The Ajanta caves mentioned along with the famous Ellora caves are the beautiful rock cut monuments features with captivating paintings and sculptures. The great artwork of the caves comprises of the paintings of Boddhisattva, Padmapani and Avalokiteshvar. On the other hand the sculptures are carved in these caves using hammer and chisel only.


The very well known Ajanta caves are located just outside the Ajanta village which is located 107 km away from Aurangabad city. The caves are surrounded with semi-arid Sahayadri Hills above the Waghur River. The complex comprises 29 rock-cut cave monuments, which date back to around 2nd century BC to 6th century AD. The caves at Ajanta are all Buddhist and are carved astonishingly. Different modes of transportation are available for tourist to explore the beauty of theses caves. The nearest railway station to Ajanta caves in Jalgaon. There is also an airport in Aurangabad, from where you can take a taxi or bus to reach these caves. The best time to visit the Ajanta Caves is during monsoon season. Open on national holidays, the Ajanta caves remain closed on Mondays.
