Gugamal National Park is expanded over an area of 1673.93 sq km. Built in 1974; the park is nestled in the Chikhaldara and Dharni Taluka of the district of Amravati in the Satpura Hills of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is also known as a fraction of Melghat Tiger Reserve.
The park is home to a variety of species of wild mammals, which includes tiger, panther, sloth bear, wild dog, jackal, hyena, chausinga, sambar, the largest deer on earth, gaur, barking deer, ratel, flying squirrel, cheetal, a type of deer, nilgai, wild boar, langur, rhesus monkey, and macaque. Also, here you can find a variety aquatic species which counts around 25 types of fishes along with several varieties of butterflies.
The park was re-introduced with crocodiles in March 1990 to February 1991in the river of Gadga in Siddu Kund, which is in a close proximity to the river of Dolar in Dhakna and Hathikund, surrounded by the Gugamal National Park.
Gugamal is well-known for being able to preserve last remaining habitats of the Indian tiger species in Maharashtra. Gugamal is popular as one of the final residual home of the Indian tiger class in Maharashtra. In 1975, the park was nominated as a Sanctuary for the reason of its ecological, floral & faunal importance in the area.
The rough & hilly region of the Melghat forest is located in the southern side, which is infertile deciduous tropical forest. There are around seven fifty different varieties of plants here in the forest. There are ninety tree species, sixty six shrub species, three hundred and sixteen herb species, fifty six climbers, twenty three sedge species & ninety nine grass species.
In recent times, around 50-75 additional species have been found, at the Melghat Tiger Preserve. The species of trees that have medicinal traits include Tectona grandis, Ain, Tiwas, Aola, Lendia, Dhawada and Kusum. Bamboo & Teak is extensively sprawled over in the forest. The best time to visit the park is in the month of October till June.
