Kamakshi Temple

Kamakshi Temple

The revered Kamakshi Temple is attributed to Goddess Kamakshi also known as Goddess Kamakhya, who is believed to be a deity from Guwahati, Assam. The Goddess is also known as the consort of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, also known by a name Shantadurga, the Goddess of peace. According to the legends, the original temple of the deity used to be in Raia in Salcete Taluka, which was destroyed by the Portuguese and the figurine of the deity was taken away to Shiroda, in the period of 1564-1568.

The image of the deity also has the images of serpent on both sides and it is believed that the image of the deity has been carved out of a Salagrama Shila. The design of the main tower is outstanding, which is under the roof that bears a slight resemblance to that of a Buddhist pagoda. At the corners of the roof there were images of serpent and at the corners of the square there were elephant statuettes.
