Another admiring attraction in the city of Udaipur is the Udai Sagar Lake, which claims to be the 5 most important lakes of the city. The lake started off with its construction in the year 1559 and got completed in the year 1565. This lake was built by Maharana Udai Singh and thus got its name from its founder.
The lake is stretched to about 4 km in length and 2.5 km in breadth. The lake is 9 m deep from the ground level. It is said that the lake of Udai Sagar was the consequence of a dam, which started off with its construction in the year 1559.
The resultant lake has been brought out by the construction of a dam by Maharana Udai Singh, on Berach River. This beautiful lake was purposely built as to provide the city with a secure source of water. This dam, which stands at Udai Sagar Lake, drains about 479 sq km and is sprawled over an area of about 10.5 sq km. the dam also has a storage capacity of 23.4 milli cubic meter. To cope up with the floods, the lake has a channel which directs the over poured waters to drop into the Berach River.
The lake is also associated with a battle event of 1576, as it is said that in the year 1573, Kunwar Man Singh invited Maharan Pratap Singh, on the banks of Udai Sagar Lake. This invitation was for discussing the terms and conditions for surrendering to Akbar, the Mughal Emperor. As the ivitation was refused by Maharana Pratap Singh, Man sigh felt insulted and it led to the Battle of Haldigarh in 1576. Later on in future, Maharana Pratap Singh conquered the army of Emperor Aurungzeb, in the close vicinity of Udai Sagar Lake.
