This beautiful lake of Bhopal, which is officially known as the Upper Lake of Bhopal is considered as the oldest manmade lake in the country of India. The lake is also recognized as Bhojtal and stands on the western part of the state capital, Bhopal. The origin of the lake dates back to the 11th century and is called as the Bada Talab by the local people living in the area. In its close proximity there is a Chota Talab also. This colossal lake is sprawled over an area of about 36.1 sq km and also serves as the major source of drinking water for the people of Bhopal.


Legends have it that this massive lake was constructed by King Bhoj and is believed to have the miraculous powers as panacea for all the diseases. The lake is a sand embarkment, which has been constructed across the Kolans River. The nearby place to visit from this splendid lake is an attractive royal garden called Kamla Park, which adds a scenic backdrop to the lake.
