Sankey Lake is an artificial one and is located in the western part of the Indian city of Bangalore which comes in the state of Karnataka. The place of the tank happens to be in the suburbs of Malewshwaram, Vyalikaval and Sadashiva Nagar. The lake of Sankey is sprawled over an area of approximately 15 hectares which calculates to 37.1 acres, having its width of around 800 m.


Constructed by Col. Richard Hieram Sankey of the Madras Sappers Regiment, in the year 1882, the tank fulfilled the demands of water supply in the area. It was known by a name called Gandhadhakotikere,for the reason that there was a sandalwood depot of the government that was located near the place.


The place has its charm with its surroundings giving an appearance of a glittering jewel in a brass setting, which is nestled in the midst of the commercial world of urban metropolis. The lake makes up for an ideal weekend getaway for the locales of Bangalore and a refreshing retreat for the tourists.


The lake of Sankey has lot to offer its visitors as due to its surroundings the spot makes up an ideal place for the sightseeing, a picnic spot and even offers an opportunity to have a water sport called boating in its scenic ambience. The place also provides an opportunity for a nice bird watching thing.


The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation offers a boat club called Mayura Sankey Boat Club which is outfitted with a profusion of rowboats, pedal boats and motorboats. The lake is an ultimate adventure for both adventure seekers and nature lovers as while rowing boats you can just explore the lake across the perimeter.


The lake lets its tourists to explore the nearby jungles and discover the wilderness of these dense forests. The Mayura Sankey Boat Club is open on all 7 days of the week, from 10 o’clock in the morning to 6 o’ clock in the evening. The club also provides a swimming pool which is opened from 6 AM to 5 PM on all days, except Fridays. The entry fee of the club is Rs 10 per adult and Rs 5 per child for swimming whereas a boating spree costs Rs 10 per individual. There is also a separate time for ladies to swim which is from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
