One of the largest museums in India, Indian museum lies in the beautiful city called Kolkata in west Bengal. The museum houses the rich collection of antiques, armour, ornaments, fossils, skeletons, mummies and Mughal paintings. Dr. Nathaniel Wallich, a Danish botanist was the founder of the museum under the Asiatic Society of Bengal in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, in 1814.


The six sections in the Indian museum comprises of thirty five galleries dedicated to cultural and scientific artifacts such as art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology and Economic Botany. The present director of the Indian museum is Anup K. Matilal. One of the oldest museums in the world is preparing for its bicentennial in February 2014. The museum houses rich collection of artifacts including an Egyptian mummy, the Buddhist stupa from Bharhut, the Buddha’s ashes, the Ashoka pillar, whose four-lion symbol became the official emblem of the Republic of India, fossil skeletons of prehistoric animals, an art collection, rare antiques and a collection of meteorites.
