Matheran is the closest hill settlement to Mumbai and was discovered by a British Hugh Malet, the Collector of Thane in the year 1850. It is a popular tourist resort in the Indian state of Maharashtra and is erected at an altitude of about 800 m above the sea level, is situated just 100 km drive away.
The hill city is also regarded as the municipal council in the district of Raigad which is dropped in Maharashtra. Lying in the Karjat Tehsil, it is the smallest hill city in the country. Being located on the Western Ghats, the hill town possesses a pleasant climate and is all flanked by lush green vegetation, tranquil milieus and pristine ambience, Matheran is commonly known as the jungle on the top as is suggested by its name Matheron, which means “forest on the forehead”.
The place is usually frequented by the tourists as it provides a peaceful atmosphere and is an eco-sensitive region, declared by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India. It is one of the few places where vehicles are prohibited, rendering it pure and pristine air to breathe. This picturesque hill town takes you back to the time over 100 years ago, when there were no cars. There are as many as 38 designated sightseeing points in Matheran, which includes the Panorama Point that offers a 360 degree view of the adjoining area and also the town of Neral. From this very spot, you can have an experience of a far-fetched sight with an incredible view of sunset and sunrise. The Louisa Point here in Matheran offers scintillating view of the Prabal Fort. The other attractions are the One Tree Hill Point, Hart Point, Monkey Point, Porcupine Point, Rambagh Point, Panorama Point, Echo Point, Charlott Lake, King George Point, Paymaster Park, Panthers’ Caves, Hart Point and many more. Matheran also offer activities like trekking, hiking, climbing etc.
Lying in a close proximity to the cities of Mumbai and Pune makes Matheran a popular weekend getaway in the lap of nature. The spot is one of the favorite outings especially among nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. The best time to visit the city is in the months of September till June.
