Jawhar

The ex-princely state of Jawhar was under the domination of the Munke Rulers during the British rule. Jawhar also spelled as Jawahar is stationed in the district of Thane in the Indian state of Maharashtra is acknowledged as Mahabaleshwar of Thane district.

It is a small town near Thane in Maharashtra holds a rich tribal history and spectacular natural appeal to its acknowledgment. Standing as the weekend retreat for most of the Mumbaikars, the city is also popular for its coiling biking trails in between the lush green vegetation and gushing tributaries.

This place with its scenic beauty and rich culture heritage is home to the Worli tribes, one of the tribal kingdoms of Maharashtra. The hill city is nestled n a picturesque setting of the lush green forests in its backdrop with the large cascades dropping down, makes the place absolutely awe-inspiring.

This small hill city has gained its importance by housing the people of the worli tribes and is also famous for the traditional paintings of these tribes. It is also believed that Chathrapathi Shivaji during his travels to Surat, they had their encampment at Jawhar itself. Jawhar is just at a distance of 80 km from Nasik and 180 km from Mumbai.

The history of Jawhar, lying in the Indian state of Maharashtra is entrenched in tradition and culture. The history of Jawhar tells that the tribal lifestyle fascinated the legendary Maratha hero Chathrapathi Shivaji and he decided to camp at Jawhar during his travels to Surat. Thereafter, Jawhar became a princely state ruled by the Munke dynasty under the British Raj.

Yet the tribal surroundings are still untouched when compared it to the other tribal habitats. There are quite a number of tourist attractions in and around Jawhar. The well-known places among them are the ancient temples, Jai Vilas Palace, Bhupatghad Fort, the water falls of Dadar-Kopra and Palusa, the Hanuman and Sunset Points, Shirpamal, etc.

The nearest airport to Jawahar is at Mumbai which is located at a distance of 180 Km and the nearest Station is at Igatpuri at around 61 km on Central Railway. On Western Railway route, the nearest railhead is at Dahanu at a distance of 65 km.
