Amarkantak

The pilgrim town of Amarkantak is majestically located in the midst of the magnificent Vindhya and Satpura Ranges at an elevation of about 1,065 m above the sea level. The hill station is enveloped in beauty and charm of the nature a typical sylvan environment. This admiring land which is swamped with beauty is also a major religious pilgrim centre in the central province and is also famous city as is watered by the two mighty rivers, the Narmada and the Sone.

The town of Amarkantak is positioned in the Anuppur District in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. This town is also known as the Theerthraj, which means the king of pilgrimages and is also the converging point of the Satpuras and Vindhyas, the two colossal mountain ranges in Madhya Pradesh.

According to the legends, the town was founded about 6,000 years ago by the Suryavanshi Samrat Mandhata, who named it as Mandhata. The literal meaning of the name of the hill resort ‘Amarkantak’ is ‘Holy Voice of God’. It is also believed that the Puranic name of the hill resort is Riksh Parvat and the river Narmada which arises from the place is believed to have been blessed by Lord Shiva.

There is a belief that, if one takes a dip into the waters of the Ganga River, along with performing prayers for the consecutive seven days on the banks of the River Yamuna, with three days of prayer performed on the banks of the river Saraswati and, with that having just a sight of the River Narmada, purifies one’s soul from the sins.

The town holds innumerable temples, holy ponds with lush green forests is a sought-after destination for both nature lovers as well as the spirituality inclined people. The other excursions from the place are Kapil Dhara Falls, which are located near Gaumukh and Kabir Chabutra.
