Agumbe a small village positioned in the district of Shimoga, which stands in the Indian state of Karnataka. The place nestles in the region of Thirthahalli taluk and Malnad, Agumbe is placed on a plateau on the top of the Someshwara Ghat. The place receives quite a good rainfall and the fact has made it a point to enable the place to earn a sobriquet as Cherrapunji of the south. Agumbe Rainforest Research Station stands as the only permanent rainforest research station in India. The village of Agumbe has been honored with a sobriquet the capital of King Cobra by the renowned herpetologist, Romulus Whitaker. Agumbe has also served as the most frequented spot in the episodes of one of the most popular television serial Malgudi Days, which was based on R.K Narayans novel.
It is believed that in the olden days, people while on their journey to Mumbai in order to colonize it, they used to say “agumbe” which meant ‘will eat later’, where ‘later’ was meant for the time after descending the hilly terrain.
This small region is spotted with a cornucopia of cascades that are found in various different hills and peaks in Agumbe. The nearest town to Agumbe is Sringeri, which is situated just at a distance of 26 km. In the very region, one can find the relics of some architectural temples and artistic sculptures, which dates back to the period of Hoysala rule in the 14th century.
This place stands as the highest point in the Western Ghats and possesses a landmark, the microwave tower. With heavy showers received by the region it stand at the 1st position for receiving the highest amount of rainfall in south India and at the 2nd position in the entire country. Agumbe hill stands as one of the four peaks in the Western Ghats bordering the mainland and separating it from the coast.
The lowland area in Agumbe is a home to many species of birds and animals including reptiles and plant species, some of which are endangered ones. The region also provides adventurous activities like trekking and other mountaineering activities in the slopes and forest regions.
This small province possesses loads of places to visit including all religious ones, historical to the adventurous ones. Some of the religious places are Gopalakrishna Temple, Barkana, Kunchikal Falls, Kundadri, Doddamane/Kasturiakka. For the adventuros activities the most popular places are Kudlu Theertha Falls, Nishani Gudda, Sita River Nature Camp, Jogigundi falls, Onke Abbi falls, Udupi Krishna Mutt, Shringeri. The temple town of Sringeri is just at a drive of 20 km from Agumbe.
The place is easily accessible from Bangalore and it is just at a drive of 380 km from it and 100 km from Mangalore. The best time to visit Agumbe is during the winter season. Agumbe happens to be the wettest spot in the southern part of India.
