Solan is located midway between Shimla and Kalka in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The place was named after the Hindu goddess Shoolini Devi. In order to give a tribute to the Goddess, there is an annual 3 day fair held in the month of June. The city has been titled as the Mushroom city of India”, for its vast production in producing mushrooms. It has also been bestowed with a title of “City of Red Gold”, in reference to its contribution in the bulk production of tomatoes.
The city is spread over an area of about33.43 sq kms, making it the largest city and the second most populous city in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
