Itmad-Ud-Daulah

Itmad-Ud-Daulah

The tomb of Itmad-ud-Daula (I’timad-ud-Daulah ka Maqbara) is often called by a name “Baby Taj” and sometimes described as “Jewel Box”. The tomb actually seems to be a draft of the Taj Mahal.

Itmad-ud-daula holds an important place in the archives of both history as well as architecture. This tomb claims to be the first which is entirely made of marble and is placed in the court of Shah Jahan. This magnificent tomb was constructed for Mirza Ghiyas-uddin also known as Ghiyas Beg, father of the great Mughal Empress Noor Jahan as she presented him as a token of love for him. It was built during 1622 to 1628.

Her father Ghiyas Beg became a minister and trusted treasurer in Akbars court in 1605. Akbars son known by a name Jahangir succeeded to the throne on account of the death of Akbar and appointed Ghiyas Beg as he was his chief minister or can say as Wazir.

The story of Itmad-ud-daula has in it the rag to riches saga. Mirza Ghiyas-ud-din or Ghiyas Beg (later known as Itimad-ud-Daulah) was a pitiable trader, who used to live in Persia, now known as Iran. His wife gave birth to a daughter whom initially he wanted to abandon for the fact of being poor, but the girl brought a stroke of fortune to her parents as Ghiyas Beg came across a convoy, which straight off took him to the court of the great Mughal Emperor, Akbar. Jahangir fell in love with his widowed daughter Noor Jahan for her unspeakable beauty. She was later christened and was marked in the history as one of the most beautiful and artistically gifted women in the world.

This tomb features as one of the most important tourist attractions for its pristine and immaculate beauty and significance, attracting visitors all through the year.
