Ujjayanta Palace also acknowledged as Ujjyonto Prashad in the Bengali, the native language of the people living here. This former royal palace today serves as the meeting place of the Tripura Lewgislative Assembly. This beautifully carved palace has been built by Maharaja Radhakishore Manikya during 1899–1901 and has been named by the Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore.


The palace was built in Indo Greek style has also encountered the natural calamity of earthquake in 1897, which destroyed it and left it in ruins, but then it was rebuilt in the heart of the state capital Agartala in an area of 1 sq km.


Erected in Indo-Saracenic architectural style, the premises of this palace of 28 hectares, still has two temples, namely Jagannath and Umamaheswar. The deities worshiped in these temples are of Uma-Maheshwari, Jagannath, Lakshmi-Narayan and Kali. The main area consists of public halls such as the Throne room, the Durbar hall, Library and the Reception hall covers 800 acres. Later the additions by adding a Chinese room to this palace were made to it by Sir Alexander Martin of Messrs Martin & Co. The Chinese Room is conspicuous structure which boasts off its artistic ceiling and now houses the State Legislative Assembly. The tiled floor along with beautifully carved wooden ceilings and doors renders the palace an extra effect and makes an attraction for the tourists.


This double storied edifice of palace indulged 1 million, in its construction. It has three massive domes; out of them the largest one has a length of about 26 m, which is placed on the top of a four-storied central tower. The palace is circumscribed by the colossal gardens that are constructed in the Mughal style as are ornamented with pools and fountains. The attractions that are added to this palace are the floodlights which give the backdrop a chiaroscuro effect, making it really a heavenly place.


Being located in the heart of the city, the palace is easily accessible via all modes of transport. The state capital has airport that enables it to connect with the rest of the country. There is a railhead also in the city as well as the city is well connected with the national highway, which further makes it easy to reach from the other cities of the country.
