Vellore Fort stands as one of the largest 16th-century fort positioned in the district of Vellore in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Fort has also served as the headquarters of the Vijayanagara Empire, at a point of time. The fort is known for its majestic fortifications, extensive moat and strong brickwork.
It is one of the most wonderful specimens of Military architecture. In the interior of the fort, there is a temple built called as Jalakandeswarar Temple is also a fine paradigm of Vijayanagar architecture.
The fort was constructed by Chinna Bommi Nayak and Thimma Reddy Nayak, the subordinate group leaders during the reign of Sadasiva Raya of the Vijayanagara Empire.
The Vijayanagara kings named the fort as “Raya Vellore” to differentiate it from “Uppu Vellore”, which is situated in the Godavari region. Vellore is also spelt as “Belur.” The provinces of Chennai and Tirupathi have now come under the sphere of the Fort.
The fort is scrupulously designed in such a manner that its outer wall is much lower than the other walls and gets connected to the inner wall, from a shade of great thickness so as to prevent it from being demolished. It is a perfect specimen of European engineers’ work.
