Gingee Fort is also known by names such as Chenji or Jinji or Senchi, lies in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. One of the enduring forts in the chapter of Indian history nestles in the district of Villupuram, situated at a distance of 160 km from the state capital, Chennai. The place is next to the Union Territory of Pondicherry.
The fort is well protected with its fortifications as it was even the “most impregnable fortress in India” by Shivaji. The fort was called as the “Troy of the East” by the British. It is believed that the fort was constructed in 13th century. The fort became a widely popular landmark for the devotees and pilgrims, on an excursion to Lord Arunachaleswarar temple at Tiruvannamalai.
The fort is considered as a rare architectural marvel created by Chola kings.
