Hawa Mahal also referred to as the “Palace of Winds” or “Palace of the Breeze”, is a prominent tourist palace in the pink city of Jaipur. Standing in the heart of the state capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan has been built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh who belonged to Kachhwaha Rajput dynasty. The palace has been constructed in the year 1799 and was designed by Lal Chand Ustad. The palace stands in the city rendering a silhouette of the crown of the Hindu God, Lord Krishna.
The main architect of the palace is a striking embodiment of Rajput artistry and has been created out of red and pink sand stone and has been magnificently outlined with white borders and motifs painted with quick lime. The monument gives an extravagant view of the city along with avenue, intersections and colorful crowds of the market.
The palace is a five-storey structure and it also gives a reflection of a honeycomb of the beehive by an array of small windows known as Jharokhas, which counts to about 953 in number. These jharokhas are bedecked with intricate latticework. These jharokhas were purposely constructed as to allow the queens to observe and look through the windows the outer world without being seen.
These petite carved windows helps in creating ventilation in the palace as it allows the cool breeze to circulate in hot summers and thus took its name as Hawa. The pyramidal outline is formed by cramming and multiplying casements, along with the repetition of motifs to enhance its beauty.
The entrance door of the palace, which is at the city side leads to the courtyard. Inside the courtyard there happens to be a double storeyed structure on its three sides.
The best time to visit to the place to have a spectacular view of Hawa Mahal is during the sunrise when sunlight peeps through the latticed windows rendering a breathtaking radiance. Presently, the palace is under the supervision of the State Archeological Department.
The place is quite convenient to reach as it lies in the state capital, Jaipur, which is connected to the rest of the country through all modes of transport.
