Chittorgarh Fort, also called as Chittorgarh Durg stands as the largest fort in the entire country of India and the grandest one in the state of Rajasthan.
Titled as the ‘Pride of Rajasthan’, is also known as the former capital of Mewar. Chittorgarh fort is also known as Water Fort. It is believed that there were around 84 water bodies in the fort, however today only 22 of them exist.
The fort is erected atop a hill and is sprawled over 700 acre of area, holds a distinct place in the state of Rajasthan. The fort is considered to be as a brain child of the Muryan Rulers. The foundations of the fort are said to have been laid down in the 7th century and further some renovations and additions were made by the rulers of Mewar.
The fort has witnessed many battles and was conquered three times, in the past. It was conquered by Allauddin Khilji in the year 1303, by Sultan Bahadur Shah in the year 1535 and ultimately by Akbar in the year 1567, the erstwhile bastion tells tales of Rajput heroism.
The main gateways of the fort are known as the Badal Pol, Bhairon Pol, Hanuman Pol and Ram Pol. The Vijay Sthamba was constructed near Rana Kumbha in the year 1440, which holds the testimony of the victory of Rajputs over Malwa and Gujarat. Chittorgarh Fort also houses the palace of Rana Kumbha. Another attraction in the fort is the Kirti Sthamba also known as the Tower of Fame, which stands as the Jain Monument of the 12th century. Rani Padminis legend is intimately associated with this fort.
According to the legends, Allauddin Khilji was captivated by the charms of Rani Padmini after having a glimpse of her on the pond. When he attacked Rana Ratan Singh and the queen committed self immolation, Jauhar to save her honor.
The queens palace and the renowned pond also stand as a part of attraction in the premises of the Chittorgarh Fort. Within the precints of the fort you can also visit several temples such as Meera Mahal, Kumbha Shyam Temple, Kalika Mata Temple, Tulja Bhawani Temple, Satbis Deori and the Annapurna Temple. The Mohar Magri, the Gaumukh Reservoir, the Government Museum and the Singar Chauri claims to be the other attractions of the Chittorgarh Fort.
