Rajwada, the historical place of Holkars, nestles in the centre of the busiest division of the town. This astonishing piece of structure of architectural style dates back to 200 years ago and stands as one of the most popular tourist spot in the city of Indore. Forming the western part of the state, the monument stands to be as one of the oldest structures in the city. Te palace has been constructed in the year 1747 AD by the founder of the Holkar Dynasty, Malhar Rao Holkar, who used the palace as his residence and stayed here in the place till 1880 AD.
Standing in the busiest part of the city, Khajuri Bazaar, the palace is situated in close proximity to Chhatris, and today it is known as the old Indore. The monument is garden facing and in the heart of the garden, there is a statue of Queen Ahilya Bai. There is an image hanged in the palace, which faces the gateway of the palace renders it an appearance of a wizard’s castle. This magnificent place serves as a living paradigm of the Grandeur of Holkars dynasty.
The palace has been created out with a blend of styles of Maratha, Mughal and French. The opening of the palace has a lofty portico with a gigantic wooden door, which is covered with iron studs. There is a gopura-like monument that is made up of wood and stone. The fort has quite a large number of balconies, windows and corridors. There is a huge courtyard, which is led by the doorway, which is further flanked by galleried rooms and the Ganesha hall, which once used to be the setting of all the state and religious celebrations. Today, this hall is used for displaying and holding art exhibitions and music concerts.
Rajwada Palace has been burnt three times in history and the last fire that broke up in the palace took place in 1984, was the most destructive one and only the front part of the palace holds the relics of the past. In the year 2006, the present Maharani of Indore H. H. Ushadevi Holkar decided to reconstruct the fort as to fetch back its lost glory & prestige. The fort was redesigned by the architects namely Himanshu Dudwadkar and Shreya bhargava and in the following year 2007, the fort was completed and the palace attained its place in the history, all over again. The palace also stands as the only one in the Indian history that has been reconstructed with the same material and in the same style and architecture.
