Standing on the banks of the Shipra River, the island-like site instantly adds up to the natural beauty of ancient Ujjain, which has been lyrically waxed by the poets, down the ages. Kaliadeh Palace, which stands as one of the well maintained and most artistic palaces of Ujjain has been built by the Mandu Sultans in the year 1458. This Persial styled domed palace, which is positioned on the banks of the river Shipra has been separated by a small stretch of water, is one of the most popular sites in the city of Ujjain, which represents the glorious past of the city.
In the enclosed area of the fort there are several water tanks that were built in the region of the palace, which were constructed by Nasir-ud-din Khalji with the intention of diverting the waters of river onto stone screens and to stir up cool breezes. It is said that the palace has been built at the place of Sun Temple and carvings of the temple can be spotted on the bridge, which connects the island to the mainland.
The two Persian inscriptions that are appeared on one of the long corridors state, Emperor Akbar and Jehangir, also made a visit to this palace. The fort turned into reinsuring the time of the Pindaris. With the course of time, the palace has gone through many destructions and damages but was re-established to its former stature in the year 1920 by Madhav Rao Scindia. There is a bridge across Shipra River, which leads to the island and to the palace. There are several gallery halls that are appeared as encircling the central hall.
The tanks in the fort collects the waters from the river and further pour it on to the stone sculptures, in a way help the management to keep it clean.
