Lal Kot

Lal Kot is given a status of being among the most ancient monuments of Delhi as it can be traced from the period of the eighth century. Qila Rai Pithora or Lal Kot, is one of the most admired historical sites in New Delhi, which was founded by the Chauhan Rajputs. It was the first place of urban arrangements in the region of Delhi. It also holds a great historical importance as it stood as the heart of industrial as well as political events during that period.

The memorial owes its foundation to Anangpal Tomar. He was the ruler of this majestic fort and built monument in his for around 1050 A.D and thereafter Tomar Rajputs shifted their base from the Suraj Kund region to this area. The Rajputs who captured the fort in the 12th century later added huge walls.

The fort possesses rubble-built walls in the fortification area, which can be seen through driving on Badarpur-Qutb road, Delhi-Qutb road or Mehrauli-Qutb road. The original Red Fort of Delhi, Lal Kot has a four-sided figure plan with gigantic towers and several gates for the exit. The most famous gates were known known by the names of Ghazni, Sohan and Ranjit gates.

Initially built as a fort lost its glory, as the slave rulers reduced the fortification into ruins and replaced it with the mosque in the course of fading away the glory of Hindu reign.It is believed that the temple area of the castle and today Qutab Minar and other monuments lie there. The fort lies close to the Nizamuddin Railway Station and the Secretariat Metro Station.
