Mahavir Ji Fair

Mahavir Ji Fair

Mahavir Ji Fair is the famous Jains fair organized at Chandangaon in the Rajasthan state in India in the months of March – April. The fair is held from Chaitra Shukla Ekadasi to Baisakh Krishna Dwitiya. The fair is organized to memorize the great deeds of Shri Mahavir swami, the 24th tirthankara (saint) of the Jains.

The place where Mahavirji temple is located is known as katala. The temple houses the image of Mahavir Swami which is believed to be dug out by a leather worker from Devta-Ka-Tila, a nearby hillock. Also, there is a Man-Stambha (tower of glory) made of marble in front of the temple. During the fair, the image of Mahavirji is washed followed by pujan and ashta-argha (eight oblations). Aarti is performed with the lamps of ghee and the offerings comprises of rice, white and yellow flowers, sandalwood, camphor, saffron, mishri and dry fruits.

Apart from that, the major attraction of the fair is the Rath Yatra.  When Mahavirji reaches to the peak on Baisakh Krishna Dwitiya, the fair of Mahavirji is taken to the bank of river Gambhiri for kalash abhishek. The golden chariot (rath) is drawn by bullocks. Four persons wave chanvars (fly whisks) over the image and recite “bhajans” along with sporadic slogans of Shri Mahavir Swami Ki Jai’.

Apart from the religious things at the fair, people can enjoy the various food items and the handicraft specialties at the fair.
