As the spring season steps in, it fetches the warmth and vibrancy leaves behind the gray winter, Surajkund titivates itself with bright and vibrant cultural crafts of India. Artisans and craftsmen from all across the country gather here at Surajkund during the first fortnight of February to contribute and play a part in the annual festivity known as the Surajkund Crafts Mela. This fair is held for the 15 consecutive days and every year it come up with a theme, representing the cultural arts and crafts of a particular state.
This annually held event is a meeting ground for the talented artists, painters, weavers, sculptors and craftsmen, from the different parts of India, who come up here at Surajkund and share a common platform to display their talents and genius. The festival is not only admired by the local but people from all across the world land in here during the first fortnight in the month of February to have the best of the state’s arts and crafts. The people exhibiting their talents through the traditional crafts get a way to earn some revenue as well, which is well paid off.
The fair is organized by the Haryana Tourism and was started in 1981. Away from the commercialized lifestyle of the state capital and other cities that comprises NCR; the fair of Surajkund is truly traditional form of fair and is organized with lot of extravaganza along with various folk dances.
The fair is profusely festooned with the crafts, fittings and furnishings, which is a part of the theme of a particular state. The colors and architectures are all done representing a particular state and its culture. This massive fair holds about 400 stalls which include the crafts and the delectable cuisine of that particular state. At the fair, you will also get the articles at a discounted price and will be in large variety. There is also an open-air theatre where Natyashala folk dances and musical evenings are held.
The place is located in the suburbs of New Delhi, the country capital and can be easily reached via road. From Indira Gandhi International Airport, it would take just 35 minutes of travelling to reach at the destination.
