Makar Sankranti Mela is celebrated in Bihar state with great enthusiasm on 14–15 January. In Bihar, the festival is also known with the names of Sakraat or Khichdi in local language. The festival is celebrated though taking bath in river. Proper festive feast is also prepared including the seasonal delicacies for the celebration. The feast also include Chura, Gur(jaggery), sweets made of til (Sesame seeds) such as Tilkut, Maska and Tilwa etc. Kite flying festivals are also organized on a small scale.
The next day is celebrated as Makraat when people prepare special Khichri of Dal-Rice along with cauliflower, peas and potatoes. Apart from that, on the day of festival people start their day through worshipping god and putting til in fire. Afetr that, people in Bihar used to have Dahi Chuda in their breakfast with KOHADA(red pumpkin) ka bhujiya which is made of both sugar and salt without adding water in it and with lots of LAI, i.e. laddus made of til, chuda, chawal(rice).
The next on the day people usually spend their day flying kites and talking to each other. Some used to call guests and relatives at home and enjoy with them. At night, the special khichdi is made with many delicious ingredients in it. Some people also serve it with many more side dishes chatni, tilauri etc. Because of the special reverence of Khichdi on the day the festival in local dialects is also called as ‘khichdi’.
