Makar Sankranti is an important festival that marks the transition of the Sun into Makara Rashi (Capricorn) on its celestial path. Also it is one of the India’s traditional harvest festivals. As per the Hindu calendar, Makar Sankranti falls on 14 January, the month of Magha every year. The day is marked as the end of the winters and coming of summers. On the day the sun changes its direction from south towards north.
Makar Sankranti also marks the beginning of the harvest season and the end of the winters. Also it is said that on the festival the sun moves from Tropic of Capricorn to the Tropic of Cancer or from Dakshinayana to Uttarayana, in the month of Pausha in mid-January.
The day is celebrated in different styles all over the country depending on the climate, agricultural environment, cultural background and location. Children are seen celebrating the occasion through flying kites. Apart from that people also celebrate the day through preparing special feast on the day.
