Ganesha Chaturthi is the Hindu festival, which celebrates the birth of the Hindu God Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati. Lord Ganesha is also addressed as the elephant-head God. The day is celebrated with several rituals and ceremonies, which differ from region to region. Milk is offered to the effigies of God along with which fasting and feasting is an integral part of this revered festival.
It is believed that on this very day Lord Ganesha bestows his presence on earth to all the devotees and also intake the milk which is offered to Him by the devotees at different places such as temples, homes etc. The God of wisdom, prosperity and travel is worshipped all across India especially in the north western region, thus this day is celebrated in a grand way with lot of pomp and show.
The festival is also known as Ganeshotsav (“festival of Ganesha”). According to the Hindu calendar, it falls in the month of Bhaadrapada, which commences on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). The day is usually observed falls between 19 August and 20 September. The ten day long festival fetches in prosperity and energy in the air and fills it in a festive mood and is concluded on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing moon period).
