Moradabad is one of the most important commercial towns and is positioned in the western part of the district of Moradabad of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The city of Moradabad is the governmental headquarters and is also a commercial as well as industrial capital of Moradabad District. The city is erected at an altitude of about 286 m above sea level on the Gangetic plains, all along the banks of River Ram Ganga, a stream of River Ganges.
This town of Moradabad is popular for its brassware industry and is often referred to as the ‘Brass City’ or ‘Peetal Nagri’ of India. Indeed, Moradabad stands as the largest producer of the metals like Copper and its alloys in Asia and is reckoned among the top five Copper-goods exporting centers in the world. It was Mohammed Yar Khan, who got migrated from Afghanistan to India in the 1860s, known as the founder of the brassware industry in Moradabad.
The city derived its name from Prince Murad Bux, the youngest son of Emperor Shah Jahan, who commissioned Taj. The prince Murad Bux re-christened the region to Moradabad from Rustom Nagar in mid 17th century. It is believed that, ‘Chaupala’ was the initial name of Moradabad. The place stood as the important territory of the Panchala Kingdom, Nanda, Maurya, Gupta and Maukharis Empires. As soon as it was captured by Rustam Khan, the Governor of Sambhal, in 1624, soon after the city came to be known as Rustam Nagar and became the province of Rohilkhand State in the early 1700s.
Moradabad was under the reign of the Nawabs of Awadh during the period 1774 – 1800. It was in 1801 that the State of Rohilkhand was invaded by the British Empire; it was divided into Bareilly and Moradabad districts. The city also witnessed a great uprising during the First War of Indian Independence that took place in 1857.
