While some legends say that the city was founded by Hindu Singh, who was the king of the former state of Sachendi, Kanpur was originally known as `Kanhpur’. There are various sagas that tell the origin and various former names of the city.
The upsurge of Indian Struggle for Independence was also witnessed by Kanpur. The city in the past has witnessed ‘The First War of Indian Independence’ which is also known as the ‘Sepoy Mutiny’, took place in the year 1857 wand led by Nana Sahib of Bithur at Kanpur. The war ended in the Massacre of Kanpur or Bibighar Massacre.
The city of Kanpur has a rich historical past with many kings and rules. Today the city stands as an important education center besides being the most industrialized and agricultural region of the state. Along with that, the city is also a prominent leather industry center. It was declared a district on 24th March 1803.

Here summers are extremely hot which comes to a fading course with the arrival of the monsoon. Then again winters are quite cold with misty weather. The best time to visit Kanpur is from October to March.
