The historical city of Jhansi is the gateway to Bundelkhand in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This district of Jhansi lies in the Bundelkhand Region, which once had a strong hold of the Chandela Kings but lost its importance in the 11th century.
The city is located in the midst of Betwa and Pahunj, resting on a rocky highland 0of the central India. Jhansi is positioned at an elevation of about 284 m above sea level and nestled in the midst of the boundaries of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Formerly known with a name as ‘Balwant Nagar’, Jhansi had been the seat of the Chandela Dynasty and rose to its prominence under their rule.
It rose to prominence again in the 17th century under Raja Bir Singh Deo who was a close associate of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. The city gained its lost splendor in the 17th century under the rule of Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha and got its name from the fort built by Raja Bir Singh Deo in the year 1613. However, the greatest mark to its prominence has been marked by the city’s revered queen Rani Laxmibai who battled against the British army in 1857 and sacrificed her life for the cause of the Indian Independence. It is also believed that the city had its name of Shankargarh in the past and got its current name from the term jhain-si which refers to blurred shadow.
