Aligarh stands as an important commercial as well as the educational centre in the country. The city of Aligarh is popular for hosting the Aligarh Muslim University. The town nestled in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and is often called as the ‘Mecca of Education’ by the Muslims of India.


The city of Aligarh has always acted as the center for various movements that have re-shaped India. It all started with the initiation of Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan which was started to lend a helping hand to the Muslims. But later on, the city also became the launch venue for the nationalist movements in India including the famous Khilafat Movement of 1920s.


The city has also witnessed the reign of the Rajputs as has been proved by the Buddhist statues, which are still present in the city. The city was taken over by the Muslims in the 12th century, when Qutub-ud-din-Aibak took control of the city and appointed the first Muslim governor of the region. It is believed that in the 18th century, the city of Aligarh was known by the name of Kol.
