The district town of Dharmanagar is also a Nagar Panchayat in the North Eastern state of India, Tripura. This town forms a part of the district of North Tripura and is the second biggest town of the state, Tripura. It is erected at an elevation of about 21 m, which counts to 68 ft above the sea level and is subjected to heavy floods.


The history of Dharmanagar is attained from the scripts of Rajmala, which reveal the past of the city. These scriptures have been written in 14th century AD. According to the scriptures the name of the city Dharmnagar is derived from the four kings who used to be called as Dharma. In these scriptures, it is also mentioned that the city took its name from the word ‘Faticuli’ which defines Dharmanagar, as in the initial times this world was used to acknowledge the city.


Centuries ago, the city of Dharmanagar used to be the capital city of Tripura. However today, it stands as a small subdivision of the state of Tripura. The city is circumscribed by Bangladesh and the Maulvi Bazaar of Sylhet in its northern side, in its eastern side it is bordered with the Karimganj District of Assam, in its southern side by the state of Mizoram and the Kailashahar subdivision in the west.

Dharmanagar experiences tropical kind of climatic conditions. Here, summers are extremely hot with high humidity in the air. On the arrival of the monsoons, the city takes breath to enjoy the seasonal showers, which remains here on the scene till the month of October. The winter season takes its charge in the month of November and remains till February. In the city you can also find the temperature reaching to below the freezing level.
