Shillong stands as the capital and also a hill station situated in the north-eastern state of Meghalaya. It is positioned at an altitude of 1496 meters above sea level. ‘Lum Shyllong’, known as the highest point of the city is at an altitude of 6,447 meters above sea level.
The city is often acknowledged as the ‘Scotland of the East’ because it is supposed that during the European times, the European settlers referred t to Scotland due to the waterfalls and hills encircling the town. The headquarters of the East Khasi Hills district lies in Shillong itself.
Shillong was the capital of Assam till the newly formed state; Meghalaya came into existence on 21st January, 1972. However, with the separation of these two states, Shillong turned out to be the capital of Meghalaya and Dispur and Assam got another capital called Guwahati.
