The holy city of Nanded has its headquarters in the district of Nanded, which is located in the south-eastern direction of the Indian state of Maharashtra. The city is bordered by Andhra Pradesh on its east and Karnataka on its south; claiming to be the second largest city in the Marathwada region. The city took its name from the place Nandi Tat on the River Godavari. It is believed that nine Rishis known as Nand performed sacrament on the banks of the river and hence the name Nandi-tat. The present name is an alteration of the original name.
The district of Nanded is mainly popular with the presence of Hazur Sahib Gurudwara, which was built here when the soul of the last Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Govindsinghji Maharaj, left his body. The city was under the reign of Nandas and also had been under the Mauryan Empire, during the time of King Ashoka in the period from 272 to 231 BC. The land had been under many kings and dynasties as it saw the reign of Andhrabhrtyas or Satvahanas in the 1st century and then during the 4th century Chalukya King, Nanddeva, ruled the city.
Nanded City was conferred with the status of “Holy City” by Government of Maharashtra due to the presence of the Sachkhand Gurudwara one of the five Takhats of Sikh religions, which hosts the Guru Granth Sahib also stands as the last resting place of last Sikh guru Shri Guru Gobind Singhji. By virtue of the presence of Sachkhand Gurudwara, Nanded has emerged as an important tourism destination center of national and international significance.
The city is at a distance of around 650 km from Mumbai and 270 km from Hyderabad, erected as the place with religious importance for the fact that it was the birthplace of three famous. The land is also religiously popular for being the hometown of the famous Maratha saint poets Vishnupant Shesa, Raghunath Shesha and Vaman Pandit.
