The city of Latur is deep rooted in his historical past is also considered as a district, which lies in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. Latur is stationed on the Balaghat plateau and the very district is bordered with the district of Nanded in its eastern and Parbhani District in its northern side.

The history of Latur can be traced from the Rashtrakuta period, when the Rashtrakutas ruled over the Deccan from 753 to 973 AD. It is said that the first Rashtrakuta King, Dantidurga was from Lattalur, the former name of Latur. The city of Latur was the home of the Rashtrakutas, was developed during the reign of the King Amoghavarsha. After Rashtrakutas, the district had been under the influence of the Satavahanas, the Sakas, the Chalukyas, the Yadavas of Deogiri and the Delhi Sultans. The district had also been under the rule of many dynasties and rulers such as the Bahamani rulers of South India, Adil Shahi Dynasty, and even Mughals.
Ultimately in the 19th century, Latur came out to be an independent princely state of Hyderabad and was rechristened as Latur tehsil, which was a part of Osmanabad District. Till 1948, latur was a part of Hyderabad, which was under the administrative control of Nizams. Then finally on August 15, 1982, the district of Latur got its independence from Osmanabad District and today, it has become an industrial hub of the Marathwada region.
