Wayanad is a derived term of the original Vayal Nadu, when splitting the phrase Vayal means Paddy fields and Nadu means a piece of land and when putting words together we get a land of paddy fields. Wayanad is also regarded as the ‘green paradise’ snuggling between the mountains of the Western Ghats. It is regarded as the ‘green paradise’ encircles the greener portion of Kerala.

Sprawling over an area of 2132 sq km, Wayanad comprises three talukas, namely, Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery and Vythiri. The district was formed on November 1, 1980 and was ranked as the 12th district and was formed out of Kozhikode and Kannur districts.


Wayanad also holds a rich history and the hills here in have witnessed and hold several evidences of the New Stone Age civilisation. You can see the pictures and pictorial writings on the walls of both the caves of Ampukuthimala, lying amid Sulthan Bathery and Ambalavayal, provides the important information about the past era and civilization.


Nestled in the lap of the Western Ghats Mountains, Wayanad makes it to be one of the wonderful hill stations in Kerala. The state survived with the revenue earned through foreign exchange of cash crops such as vanilla, tea, coffee, pepper, cardamom and many other condiments. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, Pakshipathalam, Pazhassi Raja Tomb, Pookot Lake, Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, Kanthanpara Waterfalls, Soochippara Waterfalls and the Banasura Sagar Dam are other places to visit in Wayanad.

Wayanad experiences a pleasant weather throughout the year. Here, summers are hot yet you will experience pleasant winds, the monsoon here start in the month of June and remains till September. However, the best time to visit Wayanad is is in the months of October till February.

Wayanad By Air:  The nearest airport to Wayanad is at Kozhikode.


Wayanad By Rail: The nearest railway terminal is at wayanad and thereafter you will need to hire taxi or have to take a local bus to reach at your destination.


Wayanad By Road: Wayanad is well connected by road from Kozhikode, Kannur, Ooty and Mysore. There are regular bus services from major cities like Bangalore, Chennai and Trivandrum up to Kozhikode.
