Wayanad is a derived term of the original Vayal Nadu, when splitting the phrase Vayal means Paddy fields and Nadu means a piece of land and when putting words together we get a land of paddy fields. Wayanad is also regarded as the ‘green paradise’ snuggling between the mountains of the Western Ghats. It is regarded as the ‘green paradise’ encircles the greener portion of Kerala.
Sprawling over an area of 2132 sq km, Wayanad comprises three talukas, namely, Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery and Vythiri. The district was formed on November 1, 1980 and was ranked as the 12th district and was formed out of Kozhikode and Kannur districts.
Wayanad also holds a rich history and the hills here in have witnessed and hold several evidences of the New Stone Age civilisation.
